Driving over long distances for long periods of time can be an extremely exhausting business. We should know! When covering vast amounts of land in a car, truck or lorry, it’s important to make sure that you keep yourself entertained and, more importantly, awake!
Here are just a few of our tips to make your next long drive more interesting.
Audiobooks and Podcasts
The radio is a great road companion, but there does come a time when listening to a similar cycle of songs can become repetitive. However, there are other options that may be more stimulating.
Spotify and Audible are now awash with all variety of podcasts and audiobooks to enjoy, so there’s something for everyone. You could relive your favourite book on the road or try something you haven’t had the time to read yet. Or, if you prefer, you could listen to a football, news or music podcast to make sure you’re always on the cutting edge of your favourite topic. They can be really interesting and educational and help to pass the time away.
Set Yourself a Challenge
Is there something that you’ve always really wanted to do? It could be something silly like learning all of the words to a song or, if you have company, learning more about the world by playing an intensive game of trivial pursuit (both eyes on the road, obviously). Now with language podcasts easily available online, you can even begin to learn a new language whilst driving long distances.
Setting yourself a challenge will help you feel like you’ve accomplished something and whittle the time away before you know it.
Visiting some Service Stations
If you’re on a long drive, it’s important to take regular breaks to refuel (yourself and the vehicle). After a shift of 5 hours and 30 minutes, commercial drivers should take a break no less than 30 minutes long to rest and refresh themselves. The best place to do this is at a service station.
A trio of service stations in the UK that have gained a bit of a reputation are the Gloucester Services Northbound, based in Gloucester, Cumbria and Scotland. Unlike most service stations in the UK, these services boast a modern building and food which is sourced locally and made on-site. They’ve even got a farm shop and butchery counter!
